What Is a Domain Name?

A domain name is the unique web address people type into their browser to visit your website.

For example:

  • google.com

  • facebook.com

  • yourbusiness.com

Instead of remembering a long string of numbers (called an IP address), users can simply type a domain name.

How Does a Domain Name Work?

Every website is stored on a server that has an IP address (something like 192.168.1.1).

A domain name connects that IP address to an easy-to-remember name.

When someone types your domain into a browser:

  1. The browser looks up the domain.

  2. It finds the correct server.

  3. It loads your website.

This system is managed through DNS (Domain Name System).

Parts of a Domain Name

Example: mybusiness.com

  • mybusiness → The name you choose

  • .com → The extension (called TLD – Top-Level Domain)

Common extensions:

  • .com (commercial)

  • .org (organizations)

  • .net (network)

  • .edu (education)

  • .gov (government)

  • .co, .info, .online, etc.

Why Is a Domain Name Important?

  • Makes your website look professional

  • Builds trust with customers

  • Helps with branding

  • Makes your business easy to find online

For example, info@yourbusiness.com looks more professional than a free Gmail address.

Is a Domain Name the Same as Hosting?

No. They are different:

  • Domain name = your website address

  • Hosting = where your website files are stored

You need both to launch a website.
